“Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.”
– Langston Hughs
Following your dreams isn’t always the smart or easy path. I learned this along the path to one of my dreams. Sometimes you’re too scared of the unknown to turn your dream into reality. Sometimes it’s hard to manage your “real life” and your dream. Sometimes you don’t have the funds to pursue your dream to the fullest. Sometimes your ALL just won’t cut it to achieve your dream. And worst, sometimes you try and try again and still don’t accomplish your dream, which can crush you! At what point do you throw in the towel?
One of my many dreams, the one that helped me take the initial jump out of my comfort zone, is to become a Houston Texans Cheerleader. People constantly ask, why pro- cheer? You never wear makeup, rarely do your hair, you have to put a ridiculous amount of time into your body image and dance skills, they hardly get paid, and the hours are grueling. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this! And for the longest time I didn’t know how to respond. I couldn’t explain how none of that was the important stuff, but it’s all outsiders see. They can’t see the passion I feel when I’m dancing. I actually didn’t know the love I get from fueling that passion, until…
This past year I have been blessed to have found the most beautiful love, finally escape my comfort zone completely and traveled to some of the places of my dreams. With all the happiness, there was something missing. Because there was a dream on the back burner…
I missed all my dance partners, my girlie makeup sessions, but most of all I was missing the love and passion I gain from dancing! And during this year I learned a valuable lesson- as much as I’d love to be dancing on that Texan’s field, I’m still happiest dancing anywhere (especially beautiful islands), just as long as i’m dancing. Because as awesome as being on a team full of inspiring women on a phenomenal adventure, it’s just the icing on the cake. The cake is the passion, which comes from how I feel while I am dancing and I know no matter what happens that’ll never change.
So to the women and men following a dream, Never give it up! Who knows what you will achieve but more importantly you’ll always be following your heart, and you can never go wrong with that!
After all, it’s not the destination that’s important, it’s the journey!
“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.”
– Dr. Suess
